Erev Thanksgiving
Once upon a November, I was on a pre-Holiday season diet that excluded sugar and carbs for the entire month. However, I was allowing myself one cheat day on Thanksgiving Day, my Mother’s Super Bowl of entertaining.
She was an incredible hostess and an amazing chef. She prepared everything from scratch except for the charcuterie board and the pecan, apple, and pumpkin pies.
I was home with my parents the night before Thanksgiving and around 11pm the pies started to call out to me. I figured I was less than 60 minutes away from being able to eat anything I wanted, that I might as well have some pecan pie.
My mother went nuts. "You can't have the pie! It's for company tomorrow." "Mom, no one is going to care if it's on the buffet with one piece missing. It's not like it's an apple pie with a beautiful lattice." "You can't have the pie!" "I'm having the pie!" Back and forth we argued as only a mother and daughter will do. Finally, she gave in.
"Well, if you're having pie, then we're all having pie! Please bring Dad and me some."
Every year thereafter we celebrate Erev Thanksgiving by breaking into the pecan pie. Thankful my cousin was able to step in and help keep our tradition alive.
To all my friends who have lost parents, I know the holidays aren't easy.
Blessings for strength to be grateful for the beautiful memories and thankful for the love that still surrounds you.
